Comprehensive Reflection

Standard 1: Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity
  • promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness.
This semester I learned about SO many great resources that promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness. In my third lesson, I used Educanon to facilitate learning as well as administer assessment. Educanon is such a great resource for teachers and can be manipulated to meet the needs of all learners. My Educanon lesson on figurative language promoted, supported, and modeled creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness because I was able to find a video that shows how figurative language is used in everyday music.

I would approach this standard by using Educanon as a resource because the videos are engaging to students as a lesson but also as a student project. The website is easy enough to use that students could create their own video projects as an assessment.

  • engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources.

A great example for this standard is the website that Jessica used in her lesson plan on motion and forces. The website was an interactive game where students created their own roller coasters by manipulating the characteristics to see how their manipulations either crashed or completed the track. The website would help 5th grade students explore real-world issues and solve authentic problems (like those of a Disney Imagineer) using digital told and resources.

I would approach this standard by using the above website because it's a really fun game! The website would be used as more of an exploration or review of motion and force concepts to either create inquiry or enhance understanding. And since it's on online game where you can crash a roller coaster, students will love it!

  • promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students' conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes.

During this semester, we used a lot of different resources that would meet this standard. For instance, the creation of this blog and my Wiki page allowed me to reflect on each class session as well as my lesson plans. Reflection in general helps to clarify understanding and both this blog and my Wiki page were supportive. Creating a class blog would be a great tool to get students thinking and asking questions using technology.

I would approach this standard by creating a class "Brainstorm Blog" (using KidBlog) where students could free-type their ideas for a project or writing assignment and go back to them later. The reason an online Brainstorm Blog would work is that it would allow students to refer back and forth from the Internet and copy/paste/organize their thoughts and plans into one post that they could refer to when they're at home.

  • model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual environments.

A good example for this standard is Google Drawing! My classmates and I used Google Drawing to create a first day of school flyer and it was so much fun. Even though we were sitting next to each other in class, I could easily see how simple it would be to be sitting at home collaborating together on the same document at the same time.

I would approach this standard by using Google Drawing because collaboration is SUCH an important skill for student to have and through utilizing Google Drawing, it creates a stress-free atmosphere of group work because students don't need to plan outside of school time to work on group projects.

Standard 2: Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments

  • design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity.
Throughout the semester, I did a lot of this! All of my lesson plans were designed so that they incorporated digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity. In my future classroom, I could use Prezi to meet this standard. Prezi is a presentation tool that makes presentations WAY cool.

I would approach this standard by using Prezi because it's a digital tool that promotes student learning and creativity. Presentations create interactive learning experiences and Prezi allows students to be really creative in the presentation aspect!

  • develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress.
A great example for this standard would be Khan Academy. Khan Academy is a free website that offers practice for students in all academic areas. Teachers can assign students to complete certain tasks or allow students to choose the areas in which they need help.

I would approach this standard by using Khan Academy because the feedback is instantaneous for both the student and teacher. Students also collect virtual rewards for their progress and can "level-up", which creates a competitive environment (and students are just competing against themselves!). Khan Academy can be utilized throughout the school year to create a technology-enriched learning environment where students can pursue their curiosities, create their own goals, manage their own learning, and assess their own progress (all of which the teacher can track, too!)

  • customize and personalize learning activities to address students' diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources.
In order to meet this standard, I would use tools like Evernote and Khan Academy. As stated before, Khan Academy allows teachers to choose which tasks students complete in which academic area(s). Evernote is an app/website that can be utilized for its "speak to text" functionality.

(Learning styles and working strategies) I would approach this standard through Khan Academy by assigning students different levels of tasks to complete. If I have a student that is really, really good at multiplication, they could probably move on to learning about fractions on Khan Academy. But if I have a student that isn't doing well in multiplication, I would assign him/her to tasks that are specifically on multiplication in order to receive either in school or out of school practice.

(Abilities) I would also approach this standard by using Evernote if I have a student that has limited typing abilities. Evernote allows students to speak into a microphone while converting their words to text. This allows students to "type" their thoughts much quicker than they would on a keyboard.

  • provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments aligned with content and technology standards and use resulting data to inform learning and teaching.
During the semester, I was shown many different ways to assess student knowledge through technology. A great, simple formative assessment tool teachers can use is Google Forms. For summative assessments, teachers can use Linoit.

(Formative) I would approach this standard using Google Forms because I could easily create a multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, etc. quiz on content that I taught and receive immediate student feedback. I would use the feedback to analyze whether or not my students understood the concept and if I need to go back and re-teach any areas.

(Summative) I would approach this standard using Linoit because it's an easy-to-use website where students create a digital sticky to summarize information. Linoit could easily be used as a virtual exit ticket in order to assess student learning after a lesson. I would use the responses from Linoit in order to analyze whether or not my students understood the concept and if I need to go back and re-teach any areas.

Standard 3: Model Digital-Age Work and Learning

  • demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations.

This semester I used my knowledge of Microsoft Office in order to facilitate my understanding of Google Docs/Slides/Sheets. I already knew that I was fluent in Microsoft Office applications so I was able to easily navigate through the Google applications since they're somewhat similar.

I approached this standard with an open mind because I love to learn new technologies and work on my proficiency in them. It's important that teachers, as well as students, are able to transfer their knowledge of technology into newer technology in order to keep up!

  • collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation.

This semester I learned about a lot of great apps that directly correlate with this standard! Two of my favorites are Class Dojo and Remind101. Class Dojo keeps parents updated in real-time about how their child is behaving in class. Remind101 allows teachers to text parents to remind them of upcoming events or things their child needs to remember.

I would approach this standard by using Class Dojo and Remind101 because they would both allow me to easily collaborate with students, parents, and community members in order to support student success and innovation. For example, if I forgot to remind my students about the Fun Run the following day, I could just send a simple text to remind them to bring appropriate shoes, clothing, sunscreen, water, etc.

  • communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital-age media and formats.

This standard is probably going to be my favorite to meet! I can't wait to have a class website up and running in order to communicate with parents as well as stay organized. Class websites may seem like they take up too much time, but in reality they save teachers from being contacted by parents every minute of the day about things that are already on the website!

I would approach this standard by creating a class website because the website would allow me to communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of formats. I could upload photos, videos, assignment, and post all of the homework and possibly even lesson plans. Plus, I love being creative with technology and over-preparing!

  • model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research and learning.
AZDash is a curent digital tool that most Arizona schools are using to keep track of their students' progress. I could use AZDash to familiarize myself with my students' abilities and shortcomings in order to better prepare for the school year and/or modify their coursework.

I would approach this standard by familiarizing myself with AZDash in order to be able to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use the information it provides to support student learning as well as parent involvement.

Standard 4: Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility

  • advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources.

When I was in high school, we used the website Turnitin.com in order evaluate our own plagiarism. Although I don't think students in elementary school need something like Turnitin.com, students can be taught to copy and paste the link from where they received their information at an early age.

I would approach this standard by addressing what plagiarism is and why it's important to cite where information is from. I will make sure my students understand that they need to copy and paste the URL from where they received their information if it's something that involves research.

  • address the diverse needs of all learners by using learner-centered strategies providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources.

At the beginning of the school year, it is important to ask students and parents about their technology resources at home in order to plan the school year. If I have a group of students that don't have much access to technology at home, I will plan my homework assignments to be on paper whereas my classwork to be more technology-based (if I have access to technology in my classroom). If I have a group of students that have a lot of access to technology at home, I will plan both my homework assignments as well as classwork to be more technology-based.

I would approach this standard by first understanding my students' technology resources at home because it won't do much good to assign homework that involves technology. Also, if I am placed at a school without much access to technology, I will apply for classroom grants in order to fulfill my need of technology in the classroom (and possibly at the students' homes, too).

  • promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information.

Since I plan on teaching 5th or 6th grade, addressing social media interactions is a MUST. Students are responsible for their behavior online and need to be taught how to properly handle their social media interactions. I will promote digital etiquette by providing appropriate examples of unacceptable social media interactions with class discussions following the examples.

I would approach this standard with class discussions because it's important that students see what unacceptable social media behavior is in order to know when they see or do that kind of behavior and how to stop the behavior or tell an adult about it. Cyber bullying will not be tolerated in my classroom and will have consequences.

  • develop and model cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with colleagues and students of other cultures using digital-age communication and collaboration tools.

One of my favorite resources I learned about this semester is Skype Education! Skype allows classrooms to connect to people around the world, whether it's virtual field trips or collaboration with another classroom.

I would approach this standard by using Skype Education because Skype provides students with so many experiences and opportunities without even leaving the classroom. I could collaborate with a classroom in another country in order to facilitate cultural understanding and global awareness, and keep students engaged in the process!

Twelfth Day

I had a lot of fun working with Danica and Taylor in order to make a first day of school flyer on Google Drawings. I absolutely love this tool as it's a great resource for teachers! I love how we can all be working on the same document but doing different things. I will DEFINITELY be using Google Drawings in the future when planning with my team!

Eleventh Day

During class I got to participate in Jessica's lesson, which was a great lesson about teaching gravity using games. The lesson went along with the videos we watched in class about incorporating fun and educational games in the classroom. I loved the part about the student creating a video game to show what it's like to have cancer. I think educational games are a great way to engage students and I will hopefully be able to use a lot of them in my future classroom!

Instructional Decisions/Teaching (InTask Standard # 9):

1. What went well and what didn't go well during the implementation of your lesson?

During the implementation of my lesson, what went well was the actual game. I felt like my “students” were able to practice their knowledge of fractions while having fun! The exit ticket crossword puzzle could have gone a little better but overall I think they understood the concept.

2. How well was the alignment to objectives and standards maintained?

The alignment to the objective was maintained throughout the entire lesson.

3. Describe any modifications made during the implementation of the lesson:

I gave the “students” more time than planned in order to solve the questions.

Mechanics:

1. What technologies did I use (for the teacher and the learner)?

I used an online Jeopardy game.

2. How were the technologies used (by whom and in what manner)?

The teacher used the computer to click on what the students chose.

3. It was short because…

My “students” already knew the concept which made the game go a lot faster than it would in a real 5th grade classroom.

5. How do the comments from your classmates support this?

They all said they enjoyed the lesson and even re-learned some concepts.

6. What did you learn from designing and teaching this lesson and how will you use this in the creation of future lessons/learning activities?

I learned that I definitely need to review my own elementary math skills because it’s been a while. I will make sure to review the concept I am teaching beforehand in future lessons (like I did for this one).

Tenth Day

Today's class was mostly about differentiated instruction. The videos on sensory overload and and differentiated instruction were really interesting and informative. After watching the videos, I definitely feel more comfortable creating lesson plans with more differentiated instruction for different kinds of kids.

Ninth Day

Today's class was very helpful because I got to see the classroom template wiki (which I will definitely use in my future classroom!). I absolutely love the template because it is very organized and can be edited in order to make it more of my own. I also enjoyed the video that talked about resources for students with learning disabilities. I was able to get ideas to use in my future classroom to use with students with learning disabilities. Although the video was a little outdated, I was still able to see how that technology is still around today just in different and more advanced forms.

Showing us the EduCanon results didn't make me think differently about using videos in my future classroom. However, it did make me think about what kind of questions I should ask during the videos in order to make sure students are paying attention. I also think that students should know  their answers will be taken for a grade because it will (hopefully) make them want to give their best.
